The town of Varshets is located on the northern slopes of the Balkan Mountains, at the foot of Todorini Kuli Peak. It is only 30 km from the regional centre of Montana and 85 km from Sofia. It is famous for its hot mineral water and mild mountain climate that have created conditions for developing SPA tourism, SPA and climate treatment and prophylactics. Diseases of the heart and nervous system are treated here, as well as ones of the musculoskeletal system. The composition of mineral water in Varshets has an analogue only in Argentina, Ecuador and India. It is clear, colorless, alkaline, and slightly mineralized, with low water hardness and pleasant taste qualities. The territory of Varshets has been inhabited since ancient times namely because of these springs. A bronze sculpture of a Thracian boy - god Telesphorus was found in these places, dating to the 2nd century BC. It is a symbol of the town. The Roman name of the town was Medeka, meaning 'treatment' and the Old Bulgarian one is translated as 'hot, boiling water'. The nature in Varshets is most remarkable. Vast forests, bizarre rocks, beautiful scenery, hot mineral springs, pure mountain air, all this allows the town to become a preferred resort. The second largest Natural Park on the Balkan Peninsula is located here and the area of Ivanchova Plyana is its centre. It is a favorite place for walks, picnics, sports games, parties of the residents and guests. There is a beautiful view of the town and the Todorini Kuli Peak, revealing from the lawn. The peak is one of the symbols of Varshets. It is 1785 m high and it represents a group of peaks that resemble a lying female figure. The legends of a girl named Todora gives the name of the peak. The Klisura Monastery is further below. Its iconostasis is a monument of culture. The complex provides opportunities for cultural and ecotourism. Varshets visitors may see the Temple of St. George, the romantic boulevard with the plane trees, the Bansko casino, the Solar Garden, the museum and the town Art Gallery. There are many mineral water fountains in Varshets and many mineral baths are developed. The accommodation base includes not only the SPA hotels in Varshets, but also specialized centres for medical treatment and rehabilitation. The town visitors may enjoy good guest houses, holiday apartments and family houses, which offer attractive room rates.
