The sea capital of Bulgaria - Varna is the third largest city in Bulgaria. It is located on the northern Black Sea coast of Bulgaria. The most southern and central parts of the city are connected by the Asparuhov Bridge that is a part of the Black Sea Highway and the European route E87. The Varna Airport is to the west of the city, which together with the Naval Station of Varna provides favorable conditions for visits of many tourists and city guests from the country and abroad. The earliest traces of human presence here date back to about 100 000 years. The Varna Necropolis was discovered during excavations, when the world's oldest processed gold was found. It dates back to 4400 BC and is exhibited in the Archaeological Museum of Varna. The Odessos Fortress was located on the shore of the Varna Bay, which gave the ancient name of the city. And the interesting Roman Baths have remained from this period, located in the heart of the city. Varna was officially declared a sea resort by a royal decree in 1925. Today the city is a tourist and cultural centre. Prestigious events are held in the Festival and Congress Centre in the field of art and culture, such as the International Film Festival of "Love is Folly", International Music Festival of "Varna Summer", Salon des Arts and many other festivals. Congresses, cultural and sporting events are conducted in the Palace of Culture and Sports. The Summer Theatre in the Sea Garden is joined to it. The garden is one of the symbols of Varna and is an artificial reserve. There, visitors may see the Aquarium, the Dolphinarium hosting a Dolphin show in four languages, the naval museum, as well as the zoo. One of the attractions of Varna is the Planetarium which is also located in the Sea Garden. Visitors may observe the Sun, Moon, planets, stars and comets. The second largest cathedral in Bulgaria is situated in the centre of the city – St. Dormition of Theotokos, which is of interest not only to residents, but also to tourists. The Central Sea Baths and the beach are under the Sea Garden, including a polyclinic, a water and mud-cure complex, and two quays. On the beach one may practice different sports - beach volleyball, surfing, jet skiing, boating, etc. The city is also suitable for health tourism, and there are opportunities for hunting and fishing, too. Varna hotels are extremely diverse. The city has several unique five-star hotels, which offer excellent conditions for business and leisure in a unique setting. Several classic three or four star hotels excel among the business hotels in Varna. They are preferred for convention and tourism business. A good alternative to hotel accommodation are the apartments in Varna. Located in different districts of the city, they are preferred by anyone looking for home-like comfort. In the picturesque villas zones and coastal areas of Varna, there are many family hotels, villas and guest houses which are located near the beaches of St. Konstantin and Elena. They are preferred mainly for holidays and beach vacations.
