Obzor is a resort town in the eastern part of the Balkan Mountains, on the Black Sea coast. It is situated nearly at an equal distance from Burgas (74 km) and Varna (60 km). The first settlement founded here was Navlahos created by the Thracians, and later the Greeks who settled here called it Heliopolis - City of the Sun. Here the Romans built a temple of the god Jupiter, and the town was named Teopolis - City of the Gods. The current name comes from the Ottoman rule when the town was called Gyoziken which in Bulgarian means Obzor (Overview). Tourists may explore the museum which is located near the sea and keeps items from past eras. There are the remains of the Temple of Jupiter and other objects depicting the life and culture of the residents. The beautiful church of St. John the Baptist is situated in the centre of the town. It is supposed to be built on the remains of a previous temple and it catches the attention of Orthodox Christians, Catholics and Protestants. The square with the clock tower and fountain is near the church - a favorite place for tourists' gatherings. The Sea garden or Palm Trees Park creates a pleasant atmosphere with its 100 or something palms and many trees and colorful flowers, fountains, the pond and the wooden bridges over it. There are playgrounds and a summer cinema scene. The exposed remains of the ancient Heliopolis and Temple of Jupiter are on focus there. In addition to its historical and cultural heritage, Obzor attracts tourists with its natural resources. The resort has the longest beach on the Bulgarian Black Sea - about 8 km, situated in a picturesque bay and offers a variety of attractions. The "Parvomayska meadow" is located near the town, in the direction of the Balkan Mountains. It is a silent forest place, suitable for walking and recreation. There is a mineral spring with a fountain, and the water is considered to be curative. Obzor is a favorite vacation spot for anyone who wants to rest in peace and quiet without being deprived of all modern conveniences. The town has numerous accommodations (rooms and apartments to rent on a hotel base), guest houses and hotels. In recent years, there have been also numerous luxury hotels in Obzor and hotel complexes that offer all inclusive holidays.
