Momchilgrad is located in the southeastern part of the Eastern Rhodopes, 14 km south of Kardzhali. The settlement has existed since the Middle Ages, and its old name is Mastanli. The beautiful nature of this karst area in the area of the Eastern Rhodopes turns Momchilgrad into a great place for ecotourism and trekking. The unique natural phenomenon - Vkamenenata gora (the Pertified Forest) is among the most famous landmarks in Momchilgrad. It is a group of petrified trees about 30 million years old. It is believed that the forest was buried by lava, which had carbonized the woods. The uniqueness of these trees is that they are standing. The Elenovoto Stopanstvo is located in the area of Momchilgrad, too. There are hiking trails to the sited and those willing may visit them. Although being suitable for ecotourism, Momchilgrad now is more famous as one of the starting points for visiting the unique Thracian sanctuary near the village of Tatul whose significance can be compared with the importance of Perperikon next to Kardzhali. There is a hypothesis that it was namely here that the mystic singer Orpheus was buried. The complex next to Tatul consists of an ancient pagan temple and a medieval fortress. The emphasis in the performance is a sarcophagus, carved in the sanctuary, which represents a massive cliff in the shape of a truncated pyramid. Some holy wine dishes were found around the altar, as well as objects that people had used for telling fortunes and predicting. Another interesting Thracian sanctuary near Momchilgrad is Harman Kaya. This is a massive rock where numerous pits with a trapezoidal shape were carved, serving as altars for sacrifices. Millennial remains of a Thracian city with streets, squares and reservoirs may be seen at the foothill of the sanctuary and these remains are still unknown to most tourists. There are remains of a medieval fortress and a tower of 11-12 century at the Mountains of Stramni Rid to Momchilgrad. It was built on a prehistoric shrine with a tomb. There is also a unique icon whose base is made of deer bone and it has inlays, overlaid with gold and silver. There is a religious complex of Emala Baba in the area of the town, built during the period 1362-1402. It has been a place of worship for centuries. It is believed that the grave of Fatima (daughter of the Prophet Mohammed) is in the female part of the sanctuary. Each year the largest festival in the region is organized there. Another sacred place in the region of the town is the area of Dambalawith an interesting spring. In the early hours of May 6 on St. George / Hadarlez Day hundreds of people gather at the spring because it is considered that the water in these moments is healing. There is 300-year mosque, the only in the area having two minarets, as well as the St. Boris-Mihail I Churh in Momchilgrad itself. The accommodation base in the town is limited. Currently, there is an operating hotel in Momchilgrad for those who wish to stay here, so advance reservations are recommended. The hotels in Kardzhali (14 km) are an alternative to the ones in Momchilgrad.
