The small resort village of Kranevo is situated 23 km from Varna and 17 km from Balchik on the Black Sea coast. The old name of the village is Ekrene that comes from the eponymous cape located 3 km from Kranevo where there is a lighthouse. Our border with Romania crossed this place for a short period (until the Krayova Agreement from 1940). It is also suggested that the name of Kranevo comes from that of the ancient fortress Kranea whose remains can be seen near the village where there were protective shafts of the First Bulgarian State. Nowadays Kranevo is developed as a quiet seaside resort. It is situated in a sheltered valley, protected from winter blizzards and the summer hot winds typical of the Dobrudzha planes. The Kranevska River is flowing nearby and the Baltata Reserve is close as well, representing a vague recollection of the ancient dense forests that used to grow in abundance in the region. There are rare plants and animals that can be observed in the reserve itself in their natural environment. The white houses with red roofs, colourful gardens with pavilions and the kind hosts, offering homemade dishes from their own production, fascinate the visitors of Kranevo. The combination of beautiful coast with large, guarded beach, the shallow and sea suitable even for the youngest visitors, the thermal springs and tranquil surroundings make the village a good place for a family vacation. There are classic hotels in Kranevo and small family hotels available to tourists, as well as holiday cottages and cosy guest houses, many restaurants and entertainment. The camps of Exotica and International are located on the sea coast. The resort is known for its good facilities for school camps and the National Children's Complex is located in its southern part. On the territory of Kranevo there is a swimming pool with Olympic size, suitable for organizing international competitions in swimming, water polo and synchronized swimming. The annual festival Slavic Wreath gathers children from different countries who perform in various events. In the vicinity is located the famous resort of Albena which in addition to its well maintained gardens and woodland provides stadiums, golf, horse riding, and tennis courts and. Ther Golden Sands Nature Park with its protected species and tourist routes as well as Balchik, where one may explore the Palace and Botanical Garden, are also near Kranevo.
