The village of Golyamo Bukovo is located 27 km from Sredets and 50 km from Burgas in the Strandzha Mountain. Until 1934 the village was called Kodzha Buk. There are many remains of ancient fortresses found in its surroundings and south-west of the village in the area of Zmeyuvi houses there is a megalithic complex - dolmen which is a tourist attraction, but it has not been investigated by archaeologists. It dates back to the Bronze Age and the Early Iron Age and it is related to the religious beliefs and rituals of ancient people. Golyamo Bukovo is a part of the route starting from the village Debelt to the village of Belevren, where other dolmens associated with the cult of the sun, fertility and the Mother Goddess may be seen, too. Today Golyamo Bukovo is a nice place to relax among nature and the fresh air of Strandzha that bring a lot of positive energy. Locals are legendary for their hospitality. Some of them have converted their homes into beautiful and cosy guest houses and family hotels in Golyamo Bukovo that combine the architecture of old Strandzha houses with modern amenities. The only preserved monastery in Strandzha and still operating is located in Golyamo Bukovo. That is namely St. Petka. It is satiated in a slightly visited and thinly populated area and it may be reached along a non-asphalted road. The monastery was founded in the 12th century on the place of an ancient shrine and according to the legend the area was pointed out to a villager who healed after a long illness after being washed with the water that is still flowing under the church. It is assumed that in the 13-14 century the Parorian Monastery of St. Gregory of Sinai was located here where the saints Theodosius Tarnovski and Romil Vidinski used to work. Nearby there are the sources of the Mladezhka River and in the east - the area of Petrova Niva, the town of Malko Tarnovo and the areas of Propada and Mishkova Niva where one may see Thracian tombs and sanctuaries. The Architectural Reserve of the village of Brashliyan is near Golyamo Bukovo as well.
