Dryanovo is a town in Stara Planina, situated at the foot of the beautiful and round hills of the Central Fore-Balkan. It is located 20 km from Gabrovo and 24 km from Veliko Tarnovo. The oldest traces of life in the Balkans were found in this region in the Bacho Kiro cave near the Dryanovo Monastery.The settlements surrounded by so many fortresses, such as Dryanovo, are rare in Bulgaria. During the Revival period Dryanovo engineers and craftsmen became prominent and nowadays their work is united under the name of the Dryanovo Construction School. Its most prominent representative is Nikola Fichev or Kolyo Ficheto. The town visitors may enjoy his talent, visiting the church of St. Nicholas which was one of his first independent works. The Ikonomova House and the Bridge of Kolyo Ficheto, built by the famous master, may also be seen. The Lafchieva House is in Dryanovo, too. It is the only preserved three-storey residential Revival building in Bulgaria and is listed as a monument of culture. It is known as the house without nails since during its construction not a single nail or iron bracket was used. In Dryanovo one may visit the Clock Tower, Historical Museum, as well as to see the first relief map of Bulgaria, made by cement. The town is visited mostly because of the Dryanovo Monastery, which is located to the southwest of it. It is one of the most revered shrines of the Bulgarian Orthodox Church and it is a monument of culture. Many hiking trails start right here. The cave of Bacho Kiro is situated right in the area of the monastery. It is the first electrified cave in Bulgaria and a landmark. Besides hiking trails, there are cycling routes there, and the travelers looking for a high-adrenaline are offered to enter dark caves with a guide and do rock climbing. Eco-trails are developed and the ones willing to explore them have the opportunity to enjoy the nature of Dryanovo. The Dryanovska eco-trail is near the Boruna rock and it allows seeing rare plants and rock formations. The eco-trail of Via Ferrata winds from the Dryanovo Monastery along the banks of the Dryanovska river, near Sini Vir. It goes up stone and iron steps to the edge of the cliff, descending through the woods near the monastery's vineyard and ends in front of the monastery. Along this route the tourists meet a variety of plant and animal species and may enjoy the beautiful view of the Dryanovo monastery and the town. The hotels in the town are not many, but they offer good conditions for accommodation. Visitors of the region are not only able to stay in the hotels in Dryanovo, but also in the hotels next to the Dryanovo monastery, regardless of whether they prefer pilgrim, mountain, eco and cultural tourism.
