The first mountain resort in Bulgaria - Borovets is located in the Rila Mountain, at the foot of Mount Musala, 70 km from Sofia and 10 km from Samokov. The resort was founded in 1896 when the mayor of Samokov built a villa for his sick wife, hoping the fresh air will help her get better. Gradually, other villas were built in the area, and in the early 20th century, King Ferdinand built three palaces (residences) - Bistritsa, Sitniakovo and Saragyol and thus the development of the mountain resort started. Before 1942 it was named Chamkoriya which is the Turkish word for "pine forest". Today the resort is one of the most famous and popular in Bulgaria. It is a favorite place for many Bulgarians and foreigners and it is a host of World Skiing and Biathlon Cups, as well as other competitions. It offers a variety of ski tracks of varying difficulty and workload for beginners and experts, ski school and children's snow park. There are three ski areas: Sitnyakovo, Yastrebets and Markudzhik which provide facilities for alpine skiing, biathlon, cross country skiing, snowboarding and ski jumping. In Borovets there are conditions for night entertainment thanks to the illuminated night tracks and the many taverns and bars. The resort is also an ideal destination for holidays during the warm months of the year because of its attractive nature. In Rila there are thousands of kilometres of eco-trails leading to different beautiful places in the mountains, and many of them start from Borovets. Some of the routes leads to the mounts of Musala, Irechek, Aleko, the palaces of Bistritsa, Sitniakovo and Saragyol; the huts of Chakar Voivoda, Maritsa and Zavarchitsa. The route to Cherntie Skali Rocks is easily passable, going through pine forests, meadows with flowers and streams, along it there are many places for recreation and picnics, but for those who do not want to go walking there are opportunities to for horse riding or a carriage. Borovets has a unique park, suitable for various sports and entertainment. There are bike lanes and facilities for exercises, there is a tent camp and a place to rest and for younger guests there is a playground. Available to guests are a number of classic hotels in Borovets, offering great beds and a long tradition of professional service.
