Ahtopol is located 87 km south of Bourgas and 14 km from Tsarevo. This makes it the southernmost town of Bulgaria. It rises on a rocky peninsula on the Black Sea and offers unique sea landscapes and atmosphere. Here the eastern slopes of Strandja meet the sea in a dramatic collision, bearing strange shapes and unique views. As a part of the Strandja Natural Park, Ahtopol is a good starting point for eco and rural tourism in the mountain that hides a lot of secrets, ancient customs, unique natural beauty and heritage. The mouth of Veleka is 5 km south of Ahtopol where it flows into the Black Sea. There is a strange formation here - a Stone Giant, who is believed to protect the town from harm and misfortune. The valley of the Veleka river is declared a landmark because of its unique micro-climate and rich variety of rare species of flora and fauna. History fans probably know that Ahtopol is rich in ancient and medieval history. There have been settlements in the area since Neolithic times and later it was inhabited by the Thracians. When Greek colonists from Athens founded the town in 430 BC, it became a trade centre and was one of the most important and wealthy Greek colonies on the Black Sea coast. During the Revival period the crafts flourished here and Ahtopol became a true jewel whose architecture uniquely combined the typical features of the Black Sea and the Strandja revival houses. Many temples and chapels were built - more than 100. It was not by chance that Ahtopol was called Little Athos. Unfortunately, in 1918 Ahtopol was almost burned in a fire, which destroyed most of the houses and the churches. The local people rebuilt it from the ashes, but one of the old houses was left and they managed to preserve it. It is cherished to this day as a symbol of its glorious past. Other symbols and landmarks in Ahtopol are the remains of the fortress of Agatopol, the Holy Ascension church, the St St Constantine and Elena chapel. There is an archaeological museum, operating in the town. It displays valuable artifacts from the history of the town. Today Ahtopol is developed as a resort town with rich history and excellent conditions for sea tourism. The rare combination of sea and mountain, combined with the remoteness from the big noisy resorts, makes it a favorite destination for many tourists looking mostly for quietness and coziness. The beaches are quiet, clean and peaceful, and the proximity to the mountain offers numerous hiking routes. The accommodation base is well developed; it includes not only the classic hotels in Ahtopol but also family hotels, guest houses, villas and budget private rooms.
