Aheloy is located between Nessebar and Pomorie on the Burgas Bay. It is only 6 km from Nessebar and 35 km from Bourgas. It is a part of the coastal highway that connects the northern and southern Black Sea coast of Bulgaria, and the latter is a part of the European route E87. The town's name comes from the name of the river of Aheloy that springs from the Aitos Hills, runs through the town and flows into the Black Sea. The name Aheloy is considered the most ancient one and its origin was probably Thracian. The Roman road of Via Pontica passed through here, connecting the ancient towns of Mesambria and Anhialo. There was a Roman fortress named Chim, whose function was to protect the road. Aheloy is best known from a historical point of view with one of the greatest battles of the Middle Ages - the one of 20 August 917, when the Bulgarian Tsar Simeon I defeated the thousands of the Byzantine army led by Emperor Leo Phocas at the river of Aheloy. The successful outcome of the battle determined Bulgaria as a hegemonic power in Southeast Europe. Currently marine tourism is primarily developed in Aheloy. The town still keeps its beaches intact, and the atmosphere is relaxed and far from that of the commercial resorts. However, there is a marina functioning in Aheloy, which is used for sheltering fishing boats, sailing and motor yachts. The beach is about 10 km long and 10 to 20 m wide and it extends down to Pomorie. The sand is clean and soft and the water - clear, with a low salinity. There are opportunities for active fun on the beach such as beach volleyball, water bicycles, surfboards, windsurfs and motor jets. Aheloy is suitable for those who love fishing. Different kinds of freshwater fish can be caught in the river and the aquatory of the Black Sea is suitable for sea fishing and boating. Pomorie that is nearby offers opportunities for SPA tourism and balneal healing and Nessebar will attract the fans of ancient and revival history and culture. The hotels in Aheloy are not many, but they are various enough and will surely satisfy any requirement for comfort, style and budget.
