The antique, late-antiquity and medieval fortress of Aetos is located 2 km from Aytos, on the west side of Aytos Pass on a hill called Hisarya which is a part of Karnobat Mountain. The name of Aetos, translated from Greek, means "eagle" as written information about the name of the fortress was found in chronicles of the Byzantine chronicler Nicetas Choniates and the French knight Geoffroi de Villehardouin. Two periods of construction are dated, namely in the 3-4th and the 13-14th century. The Aetos Fortress had strategic importance because of its location and its visibility in the area and that is why the locals called it Eagle Town and Gradishte. It was an important position in the defense system of Bulgaria and guarded the Pass to the valley from the invasions of the Avars, Tartars and crusaders. In 1366 it was besieged by the troops of Savoy, and during the Russo-Turkish War, 1828-1829, General Dibich Zabalkanski used the town as a strategic point. The fortress is irregularly shaped, resembling a triangle and it lies on the slopes of steep cliffs and follows the curves of the land on which it is built. Today the remains of three towers can be seen, the wall is broken down by the action of the climatic events, but one may see the stones and bricks of which it was made. Aetos Fortress can be reached by an indirect dirt road and a very beautiful view is revealing from the top towards Aytos, Karanovska Fortress and the fortification, situated in the village of Malka Polyana. Lovers of archeology and history may also visit the fortresses near Karageorgievo, Topolitsa and Zimen which are located on the south side of the Karnobat Mountain and are aligned with Aetos. Those who wish may walk to the White River Area, located above the village of Topolitsa where from the height one may see the whole valley to the seaside. Here delta and paragliders gather, and on the northern slope there is a creek flowing. In the summer it is shady and cool, and one may pick up somecornels, wild pears, strawberries and other gifts of nature.
