Mihlyuz Kale Fortress near Aksakovo. Other attractions and hotels in Aksakovo.
The Mihlyuz Kale Fortress, also known by the names of Maglizh and Mihalich, is located in the Frangen Plateau, 2 km from Aksakovo and 10 km from Varna. It is located on the edge of the relatively flat plateau, and on the south, east and west of it there are steep slopes. The first written evidence of the fortress is from the Ottoman historian Mohamed Neshri in the 14-15th century who mentioned a fortress under the name of Migloch or Maglizh, conquered by Ali Pasha in 1388. The second notice was found in the poem by Martin Behaim which talks about the battle of Władysław III Jagiełło with the Turks in 1444 and mentions the name of Mihalich. The written data and the fact that it is located near Varna led the researchers explore the terrain, but the archaeological excavations were started much later in 2001. Mihlyuz Kale Fortress represents an irregular triangle with rounded tops and the main tower was erected on its south side. The remains of a double-wall may be seen at the accessible side of the plateau in the north. It was up to 3.20 m high and in front of it there used to be a deep ditch. A gate was found, flanked by two square towers and the cape-shaped hill is barred by a second wall. During the excavation of the terrain there were found ceramics, marble vessels, a clay lamp, melted pieces of glassware from the 5-6th century and many more. In the surroundings there were metal objects and ceramics from the early Byzantine period and a bronze coin from the 5th century. The artifacts from the 10-11th century are few which proves that life was not intense back then and that the fortress refers more to the 5-6th century period, and around the 11th century it was abandoned. Studies have not yet been fully completed and the written evidence for the existence of life here during 14-15 century still has to be proved. Mihlyuz Kale is an attractive place for lovers of archaeological tourism and it has the advantage that the site has been preserved in time and is close to the seaside resorts around Varna and the Varna Airport. An easy access by road is provided. There is a beautiful view, revealing from the height towards Aksakovo, the gulf, the Varna ports and the nearby fortresses in the villages of Zvezditsa and Razdelna.
