The small village of Varvara is situated on the Black Sea coast, 56 km from Burgas, 8 km from Tsarevo and 3 km from Ahtopol, at the foot of Mount Papia in the Strandzha Mountains. According to the legend, some Thracian tribes settled here that often attacked Papia the neighboring town of Agatopolis, where people started calling the attackers barbarians and thus came the name of the present day village. The earliest written data is on a map from 1788, mentioning the name Vardarah. Varvara /Barbara/ is now a fishing settlement and a tourist resort, known for its beautiful beach. Although the beach is only one, it is one of the most beautiful in the country. The village is remote from the large and noisy resorts and it has retained its pure nature and crystal clear waters. It is surrounded by rocky coves that are suitable for underwater fishing and diving. The Dardanelles Rocks are well known. They are a favorite place of the divers near Varvara. On the coast there are places for walks, and small pools form there which are usually used as a jacuzzi or a cooling place. There are enough guest houses and hotels in Varvara, providing conditions for a peaceful holiday at an affordable price. In the resort there are restaurants, but it is not a place full of bars and clubs and this allows a peaceful holiday for the ones who love it. Varvara is a favorite tourist destination of many writers, painters and other artists. Its location in Strandzha is attractive. Guests may choose to go to the beach or go hiking in the mountains and the nearby Mount Papia where there are remnants of ancient and medieval fortress. Near Varvara there are many natural and historical attractions such as the Veleka River, beach of Silistar, Rezovska River, the Thracian sanctuary of Beglik Tash and the Ropotamo River, Arkutino. For those who want to diversify their vacation there are the nearby beaches of Delfin, Lipite, Listi, the beaches of Ahtopol and Primorsko, Silistar. Each year during the first week of September in Varvara there is a two-day festival. At the first night fire dances are organized, and at the second there are popular struggles.
