Kilifarevo is located about 12 km from Veliko Tarnovo and it is in the Tarnovo Fore-Balkan Valley. The Thracian tombs and sanctuaries found in the area of Dravyata prove that there has been life here since ancient times. During the Second Bulgarian Kingdom a fortress of Asenevtsi was built in the area of Gradat, which was supposed to control the passage, now called the Pass of the Republic. Ivan Alexander gave one of the fortresses to Theodosius of Tarnovo who founded the famous Tarnovo School, to whom Bulgaria owes its Second Golden Age of Bulgarian culture. After the fall of Bulgaria under Ottoman rule, the fortress was burned and later the Kilifarevo Monastery was built on this place. It became a literary centre. The Nativity of the Theotokos Kilifarevo Monastery is located on the River of Belitsa, 3 km from the town of the same name. It is an active convent and includes a church, residential and commercial buildings. There is a tourist wing as a part of the monastery and there is a hotel nearby, which allows visitors to indulge in the atmosphere of the area. The church of St. Archangel Michael is in Kilifarevo, which has existed since the time of the Second Bulgarian Kingdom. It is said in connection to the church, that in 1518 Sultan Selim I ordered that all stone Christian churches be made mosques. Then an unknown church official took all the religious valuables and set the church on fire to save it from desecration. After burning it, the local people built a small wooden church. Now the two churches are renewed and erected on the sites of the old ones, and tourists may see them. Another attraction in Kilifarevo is the Saraliev House - an old revival house, a monument of culture where the historical museum of the town is situated at. It presents the history of the region from ancient and medieval times, the period of slavery and the Bulgarian Revival. Its ethnographic part recreates the traditional village life, and there is an art gallery on the ground floor. In Kilifarevo, there is an Olympic-size swimming pool, two tennis courts and a stadium with grass for the sports fans. Fishermen can catch mullet, belevitsa and black trout in the river of Belitsa flowing nearby. The town guests may stay either at the hotels in Kilifarevo , or at the hotels near the Kilfarevo Monastery which offer good conditions for accommodation, business and leisure.
