Arda is a Rhodopean village, located about 30 km south of Smolyan, in a small valley about 1000 metres above sea level. It is named after one of the most beautiful Bulgarian rivers - the Arda river. It is located on both of its banks, close to its river-head which is reached through the neighborhoods of Gudevitsa and Lagat. The Lagat neighborhood of the village of Arda is known for being the birthplace of the folk singer Valya Balkanska whose voice was sent into space. The old name of the village is Arda Bashe and in the distant past it was a busy crossroad, as the two main roads for the White Sea and the Chechkite villages passed through it. Currently, its inhabitants are about 500 people. The Greek border is less than two kilometres away and until 1942 there was an acting customs in the village. Older people say that once they travelled via Greece to Sofia because of the more convenient transportation. There are also stories telling that in the past Arda was a resort for the VIPs from the White Sea Region. Every year on Ilinden (the first Saturday in August) a village gathering is held that brings people from different parts of the country. The village of Arda is the birthplace of the founder of the Woodcarving School Professor Assen Vassilev whose works can be seen in the ritual part of the town hall. The Garden of Tarzan and the Botanical Garden are among the attractions, created by the local tourist association, as well as the two churches with a centennial history. There is a unique map of the Balkans, preserved in one of them - St. Nicholas Church. There are six eco-trails, winding around the village, revealing beautiful scenery with many springs, streams and rivers. One of the eco-trails, preferred by the tourists, leads to the river-head of Arda. The largest river in the Rhodopes springs at the foot of the Ardin Peak which rises up to 1730 metres above sea level and the reflections of the White Sea are visible from there in good weather. An old Thracian sanctuary was found around the village in the Rasiltsa Area, dated to at least 2500 years. Arda is a wonderful place for rural and ecotourism at any time of the year, but there are numerous attractions for the fans of Bulgarian culture and history in the village and in the nearby areas, too. Those who wish to stay here may choose from a number of family hotels in Arda and guest houses.
